There is a rumor going around that some guy here at PC has some knowlege with computers. If you are running out of hair to pull out, post your issue here and maybe we can be of some assistance. I reject the notion that I am any sort of guru, but I may be able to lodge free some thought process to get to a solution.
Win9x, WinXP, Vista, Mac OS x 10.3, 10.4, Jaguar, Various flavors of Linux, whatever your poison.
I will try to monitor this forum and help wherever I can.

uhm, just a quick question.. I'm gonna try some sort of linux distro on my laptop, what would you suggest? I've been looking into Mint, and ubuntu. It's gonna be on my little Asus EEE netbook, so java, flash, and vlc. is a must. and ofc, good WLAN drivers :-)

Hi, I have vista x64,
Phenom 9500,
xfx 1GB 8800gt (not OC'ed. Yet)
2gb DDR2 OCZ Reaper edition
Strong case with lots of fans.

Sometimes when playing BF2 I get a bit of lag and was wondering ...

Should I kick my pc in the side or slap it?

Nah, I think its great that you are willing to go out of your way to help people. Just wanted to say thanks for being so nice. :)

Nah, I think its great that you are willing to go out of your way to help people. Just wanted to say thanks for being so nice. :)Get more ram, since vista 64-bit OS eats more ram. The more you have the better off you will be. 4gb would be a start but 8gb is great.:D

Thanks I will do in the future. My pc actually works fine but I like hitting it. And my G-card is hogging most of the memory (nearly half, even though it is 1GB itself!!!! Cannot change it, but it automatically lowers the amount if more programs are running.). I am using custom timings so my RAM is fine for now. Will upgrade for MW5. :D :D :D

What are you wanting to do with this computer? The distro you want will depend on your needs as much as the hardware needs. Ubuntu and Mint are both easy to use distros if you're unfamiliar with Linux. Mint is derived from Ubuntu so software will be just as easy to get for either. Any recent release should handle your needs for VLC, WLAN, and web utilities. Mandriva is one that claims out-of-the-box support for laptops and is a very good choice for beginners. If you are looking for something to use for heavy lifting, Fedora or Slackware are great examples of Unix design but require a bit of work in setting up and maintaining (Fedora somewhat less so than Slackware.)

If what you are wanting is a distro that you can get set up quickly and use for common computer tasks (browsing music, pics and so forth,) Ubuntu is well supported and easy to add software to. Mint does not have a release cycle so you can easily end up with problems that may be difficult to iron out. Mandriva is a great starter for ease of use but may not offer the support that you would get with Ubuntu.

Picking a distro can be daunting. I recommend distrowatch.com (http://distrowatch.com) as a starting point. You may need to get something to get your feet wet before you can determine what your needs will be.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Thank you bert.

The computer will mainly be used for surfing around on the web, since it's a netbook, it doesn't have powerful hardware, but it's got a decent battery time. About 4hours, and I was wondering if maybe something like ubuntu/mint uses less of the CPU and RAM, and therefore uses less battery. Just a little theory i got :)

Nearly any linux distro will be easier on resources than what you may be used to . Ubuntu and derivatives will likely install with somewhat heavier processes running by default. If you go with one of these you may want to look into options that will pare back the usage. One significant thing will be the desktop that you use. Both these will have Gnome set as default. I find that xfce or windowmaker are much less bulky than KDE or Gnome. I do have KDE running on a 1000GHz PIII with several daemons back-grounded as a NAT server with http, ftp, Ventrilo, BF2 server and many other things without dragging the machine down so you may be very satisfied with anything you choose. Remember that Mint has limited support options. I would, if you choose Mint, like to hear your feedback about it since I haven't heard much about it yet. The maintainer is a former Slackware user so I do have a good feeling about it. personally I think Mandriva would be a great choice since it has built in support (proclaimed by the maintenance crew) for laptops - specifically the one that you named.

The issue is unavoidable. You see that when Yoosty cranks up his computer the tug on the grid is such that lights dim and BF2 servers all over the world start to lag...just for a bit. The trouble is that since it is a Microsoft Windows O/S it frequently needs to be rebooted and so the phenomenon recurs periodically.

Discoverd it was very slow @ Assassin's Creed + 64 player maps on Forgotten Hope2 (And possibly BF2).
Got 4gb Platinum ocz.
Still Runs slow. 34% CPU and just over 50% Ram being used whilst playing the game. Vista 64 sucks as both CPU and GPU overclocks done sweet nothing. And sp2 will not install.

But other than that the RAM upgrade has done wonders. Thanks Yoosty.

You're still using over 50% of RAM you might try a bit more. I don't think it will help with sp2. It seems that Vista will handle 8GB if I'm not mistaken. Also, what chipset does your M/B have? That could be significantly slowing you down, particularly if you have something with a weak line in the south bridge. Many of the Via chipsets have this trait.

Might be a nforce 740. Cannot remember.
BTW the 50% of RAM being used is whilst playing the game.
Its less than 40% when downloading (uTorrent) and Internet Explorer at the same time (I.E. right now.) but I have also disabled pagefile/ virtual memory to see if that would help. Haven't tried the games yet but windows seems to be smoother and quicker.
When i used to use Vista x32 with a X2(6000+ not oc'ed but went bang(ironic, usually I do and they dont break)and replaced my nforce550 mobo too. I loved that mobo :'( ) and 2Gb RAM. Full settings in Assassins Creed was fine. So the hardware is fine.
Oh and I was using a 8800gts (320Mb G80 based core. oc'ed but less core speed than a GTX (fastest G80 core card)). Got a G92 8800 now.

Yes I know overclocking is bad. I used to do it all the time. When I dont things go bang. Irony.
But I always keep an eye on my temps. I run enough cooling that I can disable my cpu fan and it is still below 40*C (104F). So its not my PC overheating either.
