I have a hotmail account, so the mail program is not based on my machine so.................

I receive an email from someone I dont know with an attachment which hotmail says may be dangerous {bearing in mind it says this for most attachment}

I know if its an exe file I dont run it but just looking at the mail is that dangerous?

secondly if I look at it from my works Mac and then delete it am I ok or could it infect the hotmail folder if its a virus etc?

Tha attachment will not affect you if you just want to look at the e-mail. You would have to download it (unless Hotmail has changed something). The Mac is not going to recognize an exe but you may be able to look at it. It's a binary file so I don't know if that would help much. Hotmail won't be affect if you run the file. The only machine affected would be yours. Most of the time (always in my case) you can download the file and your virus program will let you know if it's going to be a problem.
Bottom line: Hotmail doesn't ever see the attachment any more than just to get it to you. In order to do anything with it, you have to download it. Now it's on your computer and whatever you do with it is done to your computer.
